WKF Executive Committee discuss future of karate amid COVID-19 pandemic

The World Karate Federation's (WKF) Executive Committee met virtually to discuss the future of the sport amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Led by WKF President Antonio Espinós, the meeting discussed the possible effects of the global health crisis on the run-up to next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Contingency measures to counteract these effects were approved.

The tentative schedule for events in 2021 was also re-evaluated.

In addition, the recent re-composition of the WKF Referee Commission and the process of nominating judges for Tokyo 2020 was discussed.

The Olympics were postponed as a result of the pandemic, with competition now scheduled for July 23 to August 8.

Karate is set to make its Olympic debut in the Japanese capital.

Updates on the 2021 World Championships and General Assembly in Dubai were then presented during the Executive Committee meeting.
