Watching TV with parents develops children's literacy

A new study has shown that watching TV with parents can be beneficial for children's literacy development, gazeta.ru writes, citing the journal Nature.

Scientists from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) and the University of Southern Denmark analyzed the results of previous studies on the influence of gadgets on the psyche and intelligence of children. They concluded that watching TV alone can be harmful for a child, but watching TV with parents has a positive effect.

The researchers suggested that the beneficial effects were due to parents being aware of what programs and channels their children were watching. When watching together, adults can divert the child's attention to educational or developmental television programs.

In addition, parents often discuss the content of programs with their children, which encourages the latter to use mental effort and analyze what they watch.
