USAID Promotes Digitalization of Parliamentary Activities in Turkmenistan

November 1, 2023, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan On October 24-27, Members of Parliament (MPs) participated in a digitalization seminar in Turkmenistan, hosted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the Parliament of Turkmenistan (the Mejlis).

The seminar, facilitated by international information and communication technology experts from Estonia, Georgia, and Lithuania, introduced MPs to innovative digital technologies in the optimization of parliamentary work.A key highlight of the seminar was the discussion on the preparation of the “Action Plan on Digital Transformation of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan,” which will advance an e-parliament system in Turkmenistan.

USAID cooperates with the Mejlis to strengthen parliamentary capacity and lawmaking procedures. In October, the U.S. Embassy in Turkmenistan supported a study tour for six representatives of the Mejlis to explore e-government and e-parliament systems in the United States.

Previously, USAID collaborated with the Mejlis to develop guidelines on the legal framework and lawmaking techniques for Turkmen deputies. In addition, seminars on effective parliamentary diplomacy and key aspects of legal activity were held to promote the work of Turkmen legislators.

These joint efforts demonstrate USAID’s support of Turkmenistan to advance governance practices and build a robust parliamentary system in the country.
