PRESS RELEASE US EMBASSY ASHGABAT February 10, 2023
Today, February 10, 2023, the Palace of Mukams in Ashgabat hosted the U.S.-Turkmenistan Broadway Concert to a full house. The concert, attended by more than 1,000 music lovers, featured performances of Broadway classics such as West Side Story, The Phantom of the Opera, Pirates of the Caribbean and others.
Opening the event, U.S.Ambassador to Turkmenistan Matthew S.Klimow said: “The United States Embassy is pleased to bring to the Ashgabat community a U.S.-Turkmenistan Broadway Musical Program, featuring two American performers, Kate Bass and Aaron Young, from the American Music Abroad program. Throughout the week, these two artists have been rehearsing with the State Symphony Orchestra, directed by Rasul Klychev.”
Throughout the 10-day program, the American and Turkmen musicians worked together, exchanging experiences in artistry as well as vocal technique. Kate Bass and Aaron Young worked closely with their colleagues from the State Symphony Orchestra of Turkmenistan, students of the Maya Kuliyeva Turkmen National Conservatory, and the State Choir.
The Department of State’s American Music Abroad program, managed by the Association of American Voices, seeks to bring America’s rich musical contributions to audiences by fostering cross-cultural communication and people-to-people connections through concerts, collaborative performances, lectures, workshops and jam sessions.
