On October 21, 2023, the U.S.Embassy in Ashgabat, in cooperation with the Ministries of Education, Foreign Affairs, and Culture of Turkmenistan, organized a national spelling bee competition as a part of the Central Asian Spelling Bee.

The competition took place at the State Library of the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan.About 70 talented spellers from 20 higher education institutions displayed their skills in English language, composure, and public speaking.

Two of the four winners of the national tournament were from the Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, and the others were from the International University of Humanities and Development and the Turkmen State Institute of Finance.

The winners of the national bee are invited to participate in the Regional Central Asian Spelling Bee, which will be held in Dushanbe later this year.Last year, two students from Turkmenistan won 1st and 2nd place in the Regional Central Asian Spelling Bee in Tashkent.

Spelling bees are a uniquely American tradition as Ambassador Klimow underlined in his opening remarks: “Spelling Bees engage thousands of students across the world including Turkmenistan!I applaud you for your participation: Spelling bees are a great way for you to test you English, build self-confidence, and practice public speaking.” The winning words for the bee were: “sergeant,” “eerily,” and “latency.”
