Turkmenistan-US Ties Growing Across Many Areas, Top US Official Says

The United States and Turkmenistan have enjoyed a strong relationship for the past thirty years, that is growing across many important areas, such as security cooperation, climate change, business, and commercial ties, Dean Thompson, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary at US State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, said in a press briefing in Ashgabat dedicated to his visit to the country.

“And this is just the beginning,” Thompson continued, adding, “Our embassy is in continued dialogue with the Government of Turkmenistan on how to expand our cooperation in all of these areas.”

“We will continue to work with the Government of Turkmenistan to strengthen economic ties, and boost growth and job creation in both countries,” the US diplomat emphasized.

In a response to the question on the promising cooperation areas between the countries, the top US official outlined among such areas the deepening of business ties, and ways Turkmenistan can improve its business climate to further increase foreign investments.

He stated that the meeting with the Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan focused on the ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Thompson also briefed on his visit to the ancient historical site of Nisa, saying it has given him new insights into the legendary history of the Silk Road and the Turkmen people.

The briefing in Ashgabat was also attended by the US Ambassador to Turkmenistan Matthew Klimow.

Turkmenistan and the US established diplomatic ties in 1992.
