Turkmenistan to report on the UN UPR procedure

Today, on 11 April, 2018 a briefing will be held in the UN office in Geneva where a joint report by Turkmenistan’s Initiative for Human Rights (TIHR), International Partnership for Human Rights and Human Rights Watch, as well as the report summary will be presented.

The report was prepared pursuant to the UN Universal Periodic Review procedure. Every four years the governments of the UN member states submit a report on the human rights records in their countries whereas non-governmental organizations prepare alternative reports.

The summary of the report in English is available here: TM UPR summary final March 2018.

The report says that Turkmenistan’s government has not implemented key recommendations it received during the 2013 UPR.

The rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly; freedom from torture, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances; freedom of movement; and the right to adequate compensation for forced evictions continue to be seriously and systematically violated in the country.

The UN representatives will shortly be addressing questions pertaining to the above-mentioned issues to official representatives of Turkmenistan.
