Turkmenistan Supports Opening of UN Climate Technology Centre in Country

Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov confirmed the initiative to open a UN Regional Centre for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia in Turkmenistan during his speech at the COP-28 climate summit in Dubai on Friday, the Turkmen official media reports.

As part of his presentation, Serdar Berdimuhamedov highlighted the importance of the Memorandum of Understanding with UNEP, signed on November 13, for developing climate technology transfer programs in Central Asia.

"We consider this document as a first step and a serious legal prerequisite for substantive consideration of the opening of the UN Regional Centre for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia in Turkmenistan," President Serdar Berdimuhamedov highlighted during his speech.

Turkmen President highlighted that, despite the region's exposure to significant environmental risks, the country's proposal to establish a UN-specialised centre is now gaining tangible prospects. With a population of nearly 80 million people and possessing exceptional natural resources and biodiversity, the proposal is increasingly promising.

As part of his presentation, Serdar Berdimuhamedov also declared Turkmenistan's accession to the Global Methane Pledge and stated that Turkmenistan welcomes the Declaration on Climate and Health.
