Turkmenistan Set to Introduce Changes to its Administrative-Territorial Structure

The meeting of Turkmen bicameral parliament Milli Gengesh on Saturday proposed to make changes in the administrative-territorial structure of the country.

The meeting at the building of the Halk Maslakhaty Administration chaired by Halk Maslakhaty Chairman Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov focused on matters of further improvement of the state governance system of the country, revision of administrative-territorial units of districts, cities and villages of provinces, the country’s official media reports.

The parliament proposed to abolish 6 districts (Gubadag, Gurbansoltan eje, Farap, Dovletli, Serhetabat and Oguzkhan), 5 cities with the district rights (Tejen, Gumdag, Khazar, Serdar, Koneurgench), 1 city district (Kenar in Turkmenbashi), 2 towns (Bagabat, and Garagol) as well as to abolish 36 gengeshliks and exclude 36 villages from the list of administrative units.

In addition, in order to increase the level of urbanization, which is one of the important indicators of socio-economic development, it is proposed to grant the status of village-towns to 6 villages - Sadulla Rozmetov, Ashir Kakabaev, Gokchage, Atayap, Bereket and Regepguly Atayev, and grant the status village to 6 settlements.

The meeting thus decided to leave a total of 37 districts, 6 cities with district rights, 5 urban districts, 42 towns in districts, 68 villages, 469 gengeshliks and 1,690 villages in Turkmenistan.
