The law-enforcement agencies in Turkmenistan told the parents of Guljemal Jumamyradova, 20, that their daughter had killed herself by jumping from a third-story window in Ashgabat. The dead girl’s mother thinks that her daughter was killed and then thrown out of the window to make it look like suicide.
This is confirmed by testimony from the dead girl’s friend and also by various wounds to her body, for example, a fracture on her forehead as though from a glass that has been thrown, and bruises beneath her eyes and all over her body.
However, the friend refuses point blank to talk to the girl’s parents out of fear for her own life, while the law-enforcement agencies seem to be deliberately slowing down the criminal investigation.News of the young woman’s death first emerged on Turkmen activist Nurmuhammet Annaev’s live social media stream.
The dead woman’s mother, Gulalek Rozyeva, spoke about the suspicious circumstances of her daughter’s death.More than a year has already passed, but the grieving mother still has a long list of questions which nobody is answering.
Gulalek is working in Turkey and turkmen.news spoke to her by phone.Guljemal Jumamyradova from the village of Gushly oba in Bayramaly district, Mary region, had spent her short working life as a seamstress.
Her last place of work had been a private factory in Ashgabat.Guljemal shared a rented apartment with some other girls, including a girl from the same village, Maral Agayeva, who worked in a different sector.
Guljemal’s father also worked in Ashgabat, while her mother had gone to work in Turkey: there were five children to support in the family. With her mother’s financial support Guljemal planned to open her own sewing workshop in her native Bayramaly.Guljemal went to Ashgabat in June in order to collect her last pay packet at work, and also to take her things from the apartment.
She planned to return to Bayramaly the next day with her father. But in the evening she asked to stay in the capital one more night her friend Maral had asked her to go to a birthday party as she didn’t want to go on her own.
Guljemal assured her father that she would be back in Bayramaly by 7.00 in the morning. But the young woman did not arrive at 7.00 or later, and around 10.00 her father received a call from Maral, who told him, “Come to Ashgabat as soon as you can.
Guljemal has gone!”What did “has gone” mean?Gone where?Died? The friend was panicking and clearly holding something back. She said she didn’t know where his daughter had gone in the evening, but she hadn’t spent the night at home and had thrown herself out of a window.Guljemal’s father immediately raised the alarm with all his friends in Ashgabat and himself rushed to the capital.
He managed somehow to track down Guljemal’s telephone in an apartment in building №11 in the Olympic village.According to the parents, broken alcohol bottles were lying all over the third-story apartment and there were signs of a fight.
And beneath the window lay the lifeless, and still uncovered, body of Guljemal. What happened there? Why were there bruises on the girl’s face and body? The only person who could know the answers to these questions was her friend Maral so they went to look for her.
They caught her at literally the last moment the young woman had her things and was about to leave Ashgabat.According to Guljemal’s parents, Maral burst into tears and said that she had taken her friend to someone’s birthday party, and that some guys had hassled her, making her drink vodka, and when she refused, they beat her and splashed vodka in her face.
When Guljemal tried to call her father, they took her telephone off her, tore her clothes, and as for what happened next it’s better not to ask.Maral said that Guljemal supposedly threw herself out of the third-story window.
When her father threatened that there are cameras everywhere that will help find out the truth, Maral replied that she was ready to tell the truth, if he would save her. They took Maral to the police station, after which the case began to slow up in a strange way.
No one told the dead woman’s family what kind of apartment it was, who it belonged to, and who was there that night. For some reason they couldn’t open the dead girl’s phone in order to look at her final calls and messages, and the cell phone provider Altyn Asyr would not give the family a printout.
They don’t even know whether the law-enforcement agencies have asked for the billing. With great difficulty the family managed to get hold of a copy of the forensic pathologist’s report.
It refers to multiple, severe cranio-cerebral injuries and fractures on the forehead.Guljemal’s head was so badly smashed that a scarf was tied around it, although it is not customary for young unmarried women to be buried in this way.
Moreover, the report did not say if the young woman had been raped. The document said that the cause of death had not been clearly determined. The young woman had also had an expensive necklace and large sum of money with her her final wages, but both disappeared without trace.
When her father tried to find out all the details, the law-enforcement officers asked the family to calmly bury their daughter and observe the seven-day period of mourning.
They assured them they would definitely find out all the circumstances, and identify and punish the guilty. But more than a year has passed and nothing new has been found. Moreover, the family is strongly discouraged from getting involved in the case.
Guljemal’s father is dissuaded from even going to that district: they say, your daughter committed suicide, no one is guilty of her death. The bruises on her arms were supposedly the result of attempts to hold her back from jumping out of the window.
Guljemal’s mother, Gulalek Rozyeva, says that her daughter had no reason to throw herself out of the window she loved life, her parents and family, and was making big plans for her future career.Everyone who knows about this tragic story thinks that Maral lured her friend to the party, and that she was the cause of Guljemal’s death, and knows everything.
Maral has supposedly admitted in personal conversations with girlfriends that she does know all the details, but is afraid that the same thing will be done to her.Maral refuses point blank to talk to Guljemal’s family.
She has returned to her home village, but does not leave the house and avoids any encounter with Guljemal’s relatives.Gulalek Rozyeva is looking for any opportunity to get justice.
She wants to know the truth about the cause of her daughter’s death, and to find and punish the guilty. She is appealing to all the authorities and spreading information on social networks in the hope that the head of state will hear about this tragedy.
Gulalek says that other than President Serdar Berdimuhamedov no one in Turkmenistan will help her get justice.“Not a day goes by without me crying,” Gulalek says. “They make out that my innocent daughter is guilty.
On the day of her funeral I asked for my Guljemal’s trousseau, the things I had collected for her wedding, to be given to those who had washed her and accompanied her on her final journey.
What use are they to me now…”
