Turkmenistan Looks to Open Regional UN Climate Technology Center

Turkmenistan intends to open the UN-supported Center on climate technologies for Central Asia in Ashgabat.

The proposal on opening the center was presented by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov during the online cabinet meeting hosted by President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, the official Turkmen media reports.

According to the report, as a first concrete step, it is proposed to sign a Memorandum between the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Turkmenistan and Central Asian states aimed at the development of regional programs for the introduction of climate technologies.

Rashid Meredov also proposed to develop a corresponding Roadmap within the framework of implementation of the Paris Agreement by Turkmenistan.

The Foreign Minister also put forward an initiative to hold the Youth Forum on Climate Change in Ashgabat in November, in connection with the upcoming 18th Conference of Youth (COY-18) and the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP-28), which are scheduled for November 21 in Dubai, UAE.

Summarizing the report and approving the submitted proposals, the Head of State stressed that the issues of ecology, nature protection and climate change are among the priorities in achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals.

The cabinet meeting discussed state affairs and considered drafts of a number of documents.
