The Patent Law Treaty was adopted on June 1st, 2000 in order to harmonize and streamline the formal procedures applied to national and regional patent applications and patents, and to make these procedures more user-friendly.

The Treaty provides for maximum lists of requirements that can be applied by the Office of a Contracting Party (an important exception is the filing date requirements).
