Turkmenistan holds the Dialogue of Women of Central Asia

The state information agency TDH informs that on 13 May the Dialogue of Women of the Central Asian States and Russia was held in Ashgabat.

The event also brought together the heads of some UN agencies in Turkmenistan.

According to the news outlet, “empowering women and improving their status in the society, ensuring genuine gender equality pursuant to the Constitution and the international law are among priorities of Turkmenistan’s policy”.

However, approximately a monthly prior to the event Turkmenistan unofficially tightened control over the appearance and moral image of women.

They were barred from having botox injections, dying eyebrows and having nail extensions as well as occupying the front seat next to a driver in taxis and privately-owned vehicles.

At the meeting Chairperson of the Mejlis Gulshat Mammedova said that today’s Dialogue, which is held in an extended format, had been initiated by Chairperson of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Milli Gengesh Gurbanguly Berdymukkhammedov.

The first Dialogue of Women of the Central Asian (set up in December 2020) was held on 6 June 2021 in the recreational zone “Avaza” without representatives of Russia being present.

The event brought together representatives of five Central Asian states, executives of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) and UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (RBEC).

“At the present-day conditions when the international politics and global economy are becoming more brutal and uncompromising, there is an increased demand for women leadership and women’s viewpoint in various areas”, – the speaker of Russia’s Upper Chamber of Parliament Valentina Matviyenko was quoted as saying.

Valentina Matviyenko emphasized that Russia has always supported the development of women leadership on the international area and facilitated the women’s movement.

Other participants also discussed the role of women in today’s society, their increasing presence in social and political life, respect of women’s rights, gender equality and the development of regional cooperation.

“As viewed by the delegates of the forum, the foundation which will be jointly laid will facilitate the strengthening of relationship between women of Central Asia and Russia”, TDH reports.

Based on the outcomes of the meeting the Declaration was adopted which includes measures which need to be adopted on the national and regional levels to ensure gender balance and empowering women to participate in political and social and economic life as well as the development of entrepreneurship.

Moreover, the 2022 action plan for the Dialogue of Women of Central Asia was signed.
