Turkmenistan celebrates the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child

The forum dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Turkmenistan Christine Weigand, Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, Nurmuhammet Amannepesov, Minister of Education of Turkmenistan, Mamedmurad Geldyniyazov, the young ambassadors of the SDGs, specialists of embassies and representative offices of international organizations accredited in the country, as well as ministries, departments and the business community, the media attended the meeting.

The representative of UNICEF, as well as the Minister of Health and Medical Industry and the Minister of Education addressed all those present, underlining the importance of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

As it was emphasized, over the past 30 years since the adoption of the document, significant progress has been achieved in ensuring the interests of children, creating conditions for their high-quality life and harmonious development.

However, the trends of modern global development require the development of new approaches, political will and increased resources. “The time is now to reaffirm our commitment to the Convention and the children of the world, especially the most vulnerable ones.

Government, representatives of the public and business circles should join efforts to guarantee the rights and ensure the interests of each child”, said Ms.Weigand.Comprehensive work on the enforcement of the rights of children is closely interlinked with the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

In this context, it was noted that Turkmenistan’s commitment to the basic principles of the United Nations regarding the rights and interests of children, the younger generation reflects the national legislation and the fulfillment of the SDG commitments.

Our country adopted basic international legal documents, including the Law on Guarantees of the Rights of the Child, as well as a number of major UN conventions and protocols.

The positive international experience in the implementation of the Convention, the role of public organizations and the media in promoting the rights of the child, as well as the aspect of social responsibility of private business, were discussed during the forum.

The young SDG ambassadors made a presentation “The world we want for our children and the youth”.A video with the participation of UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Faure was demonstrated during the forum.

The video clips presented in frames of the event presented a wide range of events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and also gave an idea of how young Turkmen citizens live and how they see their future.
