Today Presidents of the two countries Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Ashraf Ghani have discussed the readiness to commission a fiber-optic communication line between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.
This line, which will soon be operational, is part of a larger regional information and communications project that will connect Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
On September 30, 2020, the Turkmencommunications Agency and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies of the IRA signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. The state-owned Company Turkmentelecom and the communication Company Afghan Wireless have signed an Agreement on connecting a fiber-optic cable at the border sections Serhetabat-Tourgundi and Imamnazar-Akina in order to organize international transit traffic.
Currently, there are 5 connections in international directions in Turkmenistan, including two connections to the communications operator Afgantelecom. The new line will connect the Turkmen network to the Afghan communications operator Afgan Wireless and will make it possible to loop the Afghan communications system by connecting the Herat-Akina line to it.
In the future, this project will provide Turkmenistan with an access to other states through the IRA, and significantly expand the domestic and foreign information capacity of the Turkmen communications system.
The Turkmencommunications Agency has installed a DWDM system (40 Gbit\sek) at the Mary-Serhetabat section and a 3-kilometer fiber-optic communication line has been laid in the Ymamnazar-Akina direction, and an 8-kilometer line along the Serhetabat-Tourgundi route, which are fully ready for connection.
The appropriate equipment was also delivered to Turkmenistan from Afgan Wireless, whose specialists are expected to arrive at the installation site soon.
