Turkmenistan, Afghanistan Agree to Increase Volume of Rail Cargo Transportation

Delegations from the Gerat branch of Afghan Railway Authority and Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) agency agreed to increase the volume of cargo transportation on the Serkhetabad - Torghundi railway line, TASS news agency reported on Saturday with reference to the Afghanistan Railway Authority.

The Afghan state agency said the parties agreed to increase the transit through the Turkmen railroad, as well as to ensure the safe transportation of commercial goods from Afghanistan and improve the management of Torghundi dry port.

During the meeting, the Afghan side informed that most of the imports currently arrive in Afghanistan through Uzbekistan.

The 5.5-kilometers long railroad between Turkmenistan's Serhetabad and the Afghan border town of Torghundi was built in 1982. By 2019, Turkmenistan has carried out a complete modernization of this branch, significantly increasing its capacity.
