Turkmen Shipyard to Construct Two Ro-Ro Vessels

Turkmenistan's Balkan Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) will build two Ro-Ro ferries for the transportation of railway wagons and one dry cargo ship.

The projects for the constructions of the vessels was approved by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the online cabinet meeting on Friday. The projects were presented by Mammethan Chakiyev, the General Director of the Agency for Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers.

Presenting the projects, Chakiyev said, considering simplicity of loading-unloading operations and compliance with safety standards, there are plans to build Ro-Ro ferries with open deck.The lower decks of the ferries will be intended for the transportation of cargo cars with foodstuffs, building materials, agricultural and other products.

Regarding the technical characteristics of the dry cargo vessel, Chakiyev said its carrying capacity will be 5.1 thousand tons.

Approving the projects, the Turkmen Leader pointed to the need to increase the national fleet, mastering production of new types of ships that would contribute to the growth of cargo turnover in the water transport sector.

The online cabinet meeting also considered other topical issues of the socio-economic development of Turkmenistan.
