Turkmen scientists discuss the aspects of mitigation of the Aral Sea crisis

The Centre of Technologies of Turkmenistan hosted a round-table meeting, dedicated to the events on the improvement of the social and economic and environmental conditions on the territory of the country, affected by the Aral Sea crisis.

The meeting brought together specialists of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, research institutes affiliated to the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Environment Protection and Land Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the teachers of agrarian and medical institutions.

Turkmen scientists actively work in the sphere of environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity and ecological systems, develop measures to combat desertification and land reclamation, adaptation to climate change.One of the important directions in this work is the improvement of the socio-economic and environmental situation in the Aral Sea area.

Currently, recommendations are being developed on the introduction of new technologies and practices of water and nature management, agricultural production, the use of alternative energy sources.The review of this thematic spectrum was presented during the forum.

In particular, the information on the 20-hectare forest area in the Botendag hills, where eight hectares are already afforested, as well as planting of local desert xerophyte plants around the Turkmen Lake in Ak Yayla settlement was presented during the meeting.

Specialist of the Turkmenhydroproekt Scientific and Production Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management Kurban Hommadov underlined the importance of the recently adopted Turkmen Water Code in the context of the rational water use and improvement of the ecological situation.

Merdanbeg Piriyev, the teacher of the agricultural institute (Dashoguz) told about the practices of cultivating valuable fodder crop - crab grass.In the conditions of northern Turkmenistan, the introduction of a plant on three hectares made it possible to obtain a significant volume of biomass and seeds.

Professor Nurberdy Nurberdiyev (Magtymguly Turkmen State University) shared the results of the work on the study of sand and salt aerosols from the bottom of the Aral Sea, brought to the western lands of the Dashoguz velayat with wind.

Arazmurat Amanov, a specialist of the Kaplankyr State Nature Reserve, presented the data on the migration of birds from the Aral Sea area, developing new habitats on the lakes of northern Turkmenistan - Sarykamysh, Uzyn-Shor, Zengi-Baba, and also on the collectors of the Turkmen Lake.

Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Head of the Department of the Institute of Solar Energy of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, Dovulbay Melebayev spoke about the development of a device for measuring solar radiation, which makes it possible to assess the influence of ultraviolet radiation on human health.

The representative of the sphere of education - Sapargeldy Durdiev paid attention to the aspects of the formation of ecological culture.

According to the organizers of the meeting, the Turkmen scientists’ proposals will be analyzed to be used while drafting the Action Plan on the Aral Sea Basin Programme (ASBP-4), the development of which is prioritized by the Concept of the Presidency of our country in the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS).
