Turkmen President Proposes to Develop UN Strategy on Low-Carbon Energy

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Tuesday proposed to develop a UN Strategy aimed at implementation of measures for the development of low carbon energy, and prepare an international Roadmap for the development of hydrogen as a one of the priority areas in the energy sector.

The Turkmen President made proposals during his speech at the virtual Global Roundtable on Transforming Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development held at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

As the initiator of these proposals, the President of Turkmenistan emphasized that the country is ready to start discussing ways and criteria for their implementation at the expert level in the near future.

Speaking at the high-level plenary meeting, the Turkmen President voiced specific initiatives of the country aimed at consolidating efforts to develop solutions to pressing problems of our time.

The Head of State stressed that Turkmenistan, fully sharing the concern over the negative impact of industrial emissions into the environment, consistently and resolutely advocates the closest coordination and coherence of international efforts aimed at minimizing the risks and challenges that exist in this regard.

Presently, in accordance with the commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change, Turkmenistan develops Fourth National Communication on Climate Change and Initial Biennial Update Report with the support of the UN Environment Program and the UNDP. Both documents are planned to be submitted to the UN Secretariat in early 2023.

Concluding his speech, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov wished the roundtable participants success in achieving their goals.

The current high-level meeting convened by the UN Secretary General completes a series of round tables held over the past few months by the UN Regional Economic Commissions with the support of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Climate Action Group, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through the Financing for Development Initiative in the COVID-19 Era and Beyond (FFDI).
