Transport and trade connectivity in the Caspian Sea region in the age of pandemics  the topic of the meeting in Geneva

“Sustainability of transport and trade connectivity in the Caspian Sea region in the age of pandemics” this is the theme of the event, which was held on the initiative of the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN Office at Geneva on Wednesday, February 24.

The online meeting was held within the framework of the 83rd session of the Inland Transport Committee of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and was dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence and the International Year of Peace and Trust.

The event was attended by ambassadors and mission staff from the countries of Central Asia and the Caspian States, representatives of international organizations.

Opening remarks were made by the Executive Secretary of the UNECE Olga Algayerova and the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office at Geneva Atageldy Haljanov.

Among the keynote speakers were UN Under-Secretary-General, High Representative for Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States Ms. Fekitamoeloa Katoa Utoikamanu, Secretary-General of the International Road Transport Union Umberto de Pretto, as well as diplomats from a number of countries and representatives of other international organizations.

The participants of the meeting discussed the issues of unification and consolidation of transport logistics industries, which can become one of the most important and effective areas of further development and growth in 2021.

It was emphasized the significance of continuing and strengthening the policy dialogue to ensure global interworking between all modes of transport in order to promote the creation of sustainable multimodal transit corridors during the pandemic.

During the meeting, the Turkmen side also reported on the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence this year and on the preparations for the Ministerial Transport Conference for Landlocked Developing Countries to be held in the country this year.
