“Tornado 2” broke box office records in the disaster film genre

Universal Pictures’ disaster film Twister 2 grossed $80.5 million in its opening weekend. This achievement surpassed the previous genre record set by Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow ($68.7 million). Taking into account international fees, the total box office of “Tornado 2” reached $123.2 million. Film.ru reports this with reference to THR.

The film follows a team of meteorologists as they confront devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos. The film’s budget was $155 million, not including marketing costs.

The sequel was directed by Lee Isaac Chun, known for the film “Minari”. Critics received the film warmly: it received 78% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 out of 100 on Metacritic.

Let’s remember that the original “Smerch” of 1996 collected about $500 million at the worldwide box office. Judging by the starting performance, the sequel has every chance of surpassing the success of its predecessor.
