Today is the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

On May 8, the whole world celebrates the Day of the Red Cross and Red Crescent - an international humanitarian movement, the main goal of which is medical assistance to victims of military conflicts, natural disasters, man-made disasters, without distinction of their citizenship, nationality or religion.

It was on this day in 1828 that the Swiss humanist and public figure and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate Henri Dunant was born, who founded the Red Cross organization.

The first meeting of the Red Cross was held in 1863. In 1929, Türkiye and Egypt joined the movement and the red crescent became one of the symbols of the movement and the emblem of the Red Crescent organization.

At present time, the organization has about 17 million members - staff and volunteers around the world.
