The Turkmen Presidents orders “timely payments with contractors for services rendered”

During the field session of Turkmenistan’s Cabinet of Ministers held on 1 May in the city of Turkmenbashi President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov raised the issue of funding construction projects which are underway in Balkan velayat.

“The President emphasized the importance of control over carrying out works to further strengthen the Turkmen economy and improve well-being of residents. The issues of timely reciprocal payments between customers and contractors for rendering services remain among the key requirements, the head of the state said and gave some specific instructions to Deputy Prime Minister Gochmyrat Myradov”, the state information agency TDH reports.

Let us recall that correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” managed to find out that Turkish construction company Polimex and many other subcontractors failed to receive payments from the Turkmen authorities for the construction objects they had already commissioned in particular, for the new airport in Ashgabat and some facilities built in the run-up to the Asian Games.

For this reason, the Turkey-based Polimex halted cooperation with Turkmenistan and the company’s CEO left the country.

According to Radio “Azatlyk”, Turkmenistan owes a total of $800 million to Polimex.

Moreover, in late December 2017 Turkish entrepreneurs working in Turkmenistan organized a protest action in front of Turkmenistan’s Embassy in Ankara as for two years they had failed to get payments for various construction projects they completed.

In May 2017 Belarus claimed that Turkmenistan has not settled payments for the construction of Garlyk mining and refining facility so far.

It should be highlighted that on 2 May the international seaport built by the Turkish company GAP Insaat is scheduled to be commissioned in Turkmenbashi.
