The news website “Gundogar” reports that on 10 August 2017 the former chief of the Turkmen President’s Security Service Akmurad Rejepov died.
His body was handed over to the family members to be buried.
The commemoration services were held on 17 August in Lebap velayat.
Sources at “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that according to the official version, voiced by Rejepov’s family members, blood clotting was the reason of his death.
The human rights center “Memorial” is quoted as saying that starting from 1985 Akmrad Rejepov held the post of the chief of the Secret Service of Turkmenistan’s leaders, which in 1992 was reorganized into the Security Service of the Turkmen President.
After the death of President Saparmurat Niyazov in December 2006 he played a key role in transition of power to the incumbent President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov.Pursuant to the decree of the latter issued on 15 May 2007 Lieutenant General Rejepov was relieved from his post “following his appointment to another post”.
Soon he was taken into custody.On 27 July pursuant to the verdict of Turkmenistan’s Supreme Court he was found guilty under six articles of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to a 17 year imprisonment term.
After the trial Akmurad Rejepov was placed into the secret penitentiary facility where he had been kept incommunicado for 10 years in violation of statues of international and national law.
In recent years his name was mentioned in the files of the international campaign “Prove they are alive” which called on to disclose information about the fate of over 100 “special prisoners” who had disappeared in Turkmen prisons over the past 15 years.
