Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that the building of the former International Turkmen-Turkish University on Gerogly street in the district of Keshi is being demolished in Ashgabat.
In February 2022 owners of private residential buildings located in the district, not far from the monument to Alabai dog, were notified that their houses were subject to demolition.
Those who have residence registration and official documents for their property have been promised to be provided with alternative accommodation in apartment blocks, which are currently being built in the Abadan etrap (formerly, Bezmein) a year and a half or two years from now.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the University building was held in 2013 with the the Presidents of Turkmenistan and Turkey attending.In July 2016 the Turkish authorities accused the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen of a coup attempt and the Hizmet Movement he led was recognized as a terrorist organization.
Turkey called on other countries to close educational establishments associated with Gülen.A month later the Turkmen-Turkish University in Ashgabat was closed.
It remains unclear what building will replace the University.
In July 2021 projects for several new buildings were demonstrated to Berdymukhammedov.Some of them are located in the areas currently occupied by residential buildings.
For instance, two weeks ago correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” reported on the demolition of two and three-storey apartment blocks in the district of Tekin abazaar along Azadi street.
The complex of the Internatioanl medical and rehabilitation centre is scheduled to be built here.
