The issues of the implementation of international humanitarian law in national legislation, as well as cooperation with the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan were discussed today at a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov and the head of the regional office of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia Sangita Koenig, who arrived in Ashgabat.
During the conversation, the sides exchanged views on the current state of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the ICRC, and also considered possible directions for further development of relations of mutual interest, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports.
Sangeeta Koenig congratulated the Foreign Minister on the 26th anniversary of Turkmenistan's neutrality, noting the country's high achievements in the humanitarian field.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was formed in 1863 at the initiative of the Swiss Henri Dunant to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of armed conflicts.
Over time, the ICRC's activities have expanded to other areas: mediation in conflict situations, providing assistance to victims of armed conflicts, tracing missing persons and family reunification services, assisting in the training of medical personnel for humanitarian missions, developing international humanitarian law, monitoring their implementation and promoting the dissemination of knowledge on humanitarian law.
