Tajikistan invites representatives of all UN member countries to take part in the international conference on glacier conservation, which will be held in Dushanbe in 2025. This was stated by First Deputy Prime Minister of the
Republic Khokim Kholikzoda at the Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York, TASS reports.
I invite you all to take part in the international conference on glacier conservation, which will be held in Tajikistan next year. This conference will be our country’s next contribution to the implementation of SDG-13 and will provide a good platform for discussing issues related to climate change,” he said.
Kholikzoda recalled that a conference on water problems had already been held in Dushanbe in 2024, the results of which were presented at a side event at the UN headquarters as part of this forum.
Tajikistan pays great attention to the conservation of glaciers, as they provide the majority of water resources in the country.
President of the Republic Emomali Rahmon previously noted that over the past decades, out of 13 thousand glaciers in the country, a thousand have completely melted. In December 2022, the UN General Assembly at its 77th session supported the initiative of Tajikistan and unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2025 the International Year of Glacier Protection.
A thematic conference will be held in Dushanbe this year.
