Surgery to change eye color is gaining popularity around the world

Recently, more and more people are deciding to undergo keratopigmentation, an operation to change eye color. Initially, this procedure was used exclusively for medical purposes: to correct the consequences of injuries, infections and congenital diseases. However, it soon crossed the boundaries of medicine and became a popular beauty trend, reports onliner.by with reference to The Guardian.

Bloggers on social networks share their experiences, demonstrating how they changed their natural eye color forever. Most often, brown eye color is changed to rich green or blue. The doctor uses a laser or needle to make an incision in the cornea and inject pigment into the resulting “pocket”, which masks the natural color of the iris.

Doctors believe that performing such an operation solely for the sake of beauty does not have sufficient grounds. Such injections can cause vision problems even in people who previously had no eye problems, up to and including complete blindness.

In early 2024, the American Academy of Ophthalmology issued a warning about the dangers of keratopigmentation and other methods of changing eye color. In the UK, this procedure is completely prohibited for cosmetic purposes. Those who want to do it are forced to specially travel abroad.

However, TikTok videos about keratopigmentation are already receiving millions of views. Opinions in the comments, as always, were divided: from delight to indignation.
