The next meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State will be held in Bishkek on October 13, 2023. The corresponding decision was made by the heads of the Commonwealth of Independent States following the summit in Astana.
The chairmanship in the Commonwealth in the next calendar year should pass to Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan and Russia will act as co-chairs.
At the summit in Astana, President Sadyr Japarov said that Kyrgyzstan, as chairman of the CIS, would focus on strengthening good-neighborly and trusting relations between the countries of the organization and issues of climate change, the topic of ecology and security.
Besides that, by decision of the council of the head of state, the powers of the current chairman of the CIS executive committee, Sergei Lebedev, were extended for another three-year period.
The leaders of the countries also agreed with the proposal of the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to rename the post held by Sergey Lebedev from 2023 from Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee - Executive Secretary to Secretary General of the CIS.
