A new study published in the journal BMJ Thorax raises questions about the safety of popular quartz countertops. Scientists have discovered a link between the processing of this material and the development of a serious lung disease silicosis. Runews24.ru reports this.
A study at a specialist clinic identified eight cases of silicosis in men aged 27 to 56 years who worked with quartz countertops. One patient died and two required lung transplants.
The cause of the disease lies In fine quartz dust formed when cutting and polishing countertops. Inhaling this dust can cause serious lung damage.
In light of the findings, the researchers call for consideration of banning quartz countertops and strengthening measures to protect workers involved in their production.
