Specialists of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in the city of Dubna, Russia, are aimed in 2021 to study the properties of chemical element 114, 115 and 118 of the periodic table of D.I.
Mendeleev in order to try to discover new elements of the periodic table next year.It was stated by Grigory Trubnikov, JINR Director, Academician of the Russian Academy of Science.
The scientist said that the main task for the current year for the institute is to collect maximum statistics in order to understand where to look for new elements 119, 120, 121, and what properties they will have. To learn what comes next after Oganesson heaviest element on today’s periodic table is of particular interest to scientists.
Oganesson is a synthetic chemical element with the atomic number 118.It was first synthesized by a team leaded by Yuri Oganessian, head of the G.N.Flyorov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR.
The name is in line with the tradition of honoring a scientist, in this case the nuclear physicist Yuri Oganessian, who played a leading role in the discovery of the heaviest elements in the periodic table.
Meanwhile, Oganessian does not exclude that in future, as new super-heavy elements are synthesized and their properties are studied, the Periodic Table may be enlarged.
Currently, the largest nuclear physics centers in the world have started work on the synthesis of new elements, which have already been called the “big race”.
Russia intends to be first in the world to discover them as the scientists of the JINR has the world’s first unique Factory of Superheavy Elements. The facility is based on the DC-280 cyclotron, accelerator of charged particle.
The new installation enables to increase manifold the efficiency of experiments on the synthesis of superheavy elements. In December 2020, a unique research cycle was launched at the facility.
In January 2021, Turkmenistan has adopted a new State Program for development of chemical science and technology. Since the beginning of the year, the responsibilities of the Technological Projects Laboratory at the Institute of Chemistry under the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan, which will introduce innovative developments of Turkmen scientists in production, have been expanded.
