Russia will introduce a ban on certain types of PET packaging starting in the fall of 2025

A new restriction on the production of certain types of plastic containers will come into force in Russia on September 1, 2025. The corresponding order No. 2827-r was signed by the government on October 14 and has already appeared on the state legal information portal, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the document, the restrictions will affect three categories of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging. In particular, the production of PET bottles of all colors except blue, white, green, brown and transparent will be discontinued. Multilayer PET bottles and containers with polyvinyl chloride labels (with the exception of heat-shrink labels) will also be banned.

The decision is based on the difficulties or impossibility of recycling these types of packaging. To monitor compliance with the new requirements, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will annually, starting in 2026, submit an updated list of prohibited products, agreed upon with the relevant departments.
