Residents of Lebap velayat report horse thefts; the horse meat is sold to restaurants.

13 June, 2021

Since late April early May residents of Lebap velayat have been reporting an increasing number of horse thefts.

Residents of some villages interviewed by a correspondent of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” are convinced that the stolen horses are slaughtered to sell their meat to owners of cafes and restaurants. They in their turn mix horse meat to ground beef or lamb or add it to dishes.

A kilo of boneless beef costs 80 manats at Turkmenabat markets whereas beef with bones is sold at 70 manats. Horse meat is sold to restaurants for half of the price.

At wasteland and along drainage collectors (waste ditches) people often come across horse bones eaten by dogs and jackals and their intestines.

Residents of the village of Khodja-Kenepsi, Farap etrap have repeatedly contacted the police and the public prosecutor’s office regarding horse thefts but written complaints are not accepted.

The officials tell residents that they should take better care of their own livestock.

Thefts also occur in other districts of the province, for instance, in Darganat and Sayat.
