The registration of Presidential candidates is ongoing in Turkmenistan.According to the state information agency TDH, on 16 February, 2022 the Central Election Commission registered deputy khyakim of Mary velayat Agadjan Bekmyradov, nominated by the Agrarian party the day before, as a Presidential candidate.
Representatives of the Turkmen opposition living in exile also announced that they wish to take part in the Presidential election.
A renowned horse breeder and former political prisoner Geldy Kyarizov expressed his intention to hold an alternative election and e-voting. He is a member of the human rights organization “The Rights and Liberties of Turkmenistan’s Citizens”.
It is unclear how e-voting could be arranged. “We are now looking for secure software which would ensure privacy for our voters”, – Kyarizov’s statement runs.

Radio “Azatlyk” reports that Murad Kurbanov, Chairman of the opposition movement “The Democratic Choice of Turkmenistan”, also intends to run for President.
He outlined his plans to hold alternative voting in Telegram, IMO and WhatsApp messengers as well as on social media, YouTube and Facebook.
According to Kurbanov, this initiative will highlight the illegitimacy of the election scheduled to be held in Turkmenistan.
Pursuant to the Constitution, only Turkmen citizens who have been permanently residing and working in Turkmenistan over the past fifteen years are entitled to run for election.
This regulation precludes outside opposition candidates to run for election.Because of the extremely repressive nature of the Turkmen regime, opposition parties and politicians are almost non-existent in Turkmenistan.
