President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has congratulated Serzh Sargsyan on being elected Prime Minister of Armenia.
In his address the Turkmen leader emphasized that the knowledge, high professionalism and extensive political experience of Serzh Sargsyan will contribute to further facilitating of mutually beneficial cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Armenia, the state information agency TDH reports.
At the same time, the protest action against Sargsyan’s appointment as the Prime Minister has been held in Yerevan since 13 April.
On Saturday the police detained over 100 opposition members.The activists cordoned off the streets to prevent the vehicles from accessing residential areas of Yerevan.
On Sunday Armenia’s police used riot control weapons and started dispersing the demonstration. The situation in the capital of Armenia remains extremely tense.
The protestors are discontent that Sargsyan who served his 10 year term as the President has remained in power, now as the Prime Minister. They demand that he should step down as the head of the government.
