Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Iran have developed a roadmap for the development of the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC), which will increase the capacity of the route to 15 million tonnes by 2027, Kazakh Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said at the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) summit in Tashkent last Thursday.
Alikhan Smailov emphasised the importance of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran railway route, which serves as the shortest route between the ECO countries in Central Asia and the Middle East, the press service of the Türkmenawtoulaglary agency reports.
According to the report, cargo traffic on this route to Iran has increased by 9 percent to more than 1.5 million tonnes over the past nine months.
In August this year, EEC Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Arzybek Kozhoshev and Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Russian Federation Mohammed Ahmed Al-Jaber discussed freight transport communication between the EAEU countries and the UAE, including railway transport via Turkmenistan.
