On 3 December, 2019 Turkmenistan’s state media outlets announced that the former Interior Minister Isgender Mulikov and Chairperson of Turkmenistan’s Migration Office Meylis Nobatov were arrested and sentenced on charges of large-scale corruption.
According to the sources of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan”, both former senior government officials were sentenced to 15-year imprisonment terms.
The Supreme Court session was held on 29 November, 2019. The arrested officials were not present at hearings with only judges, the prosecutor and attorneys in presence. By that moment Mulikov and Nobatov have already been convoyed to the Ovan-depe colony where they were filmed for a television broadcast.
The following episodes were included in the convicts’ cases.
Mulikov bought a three-room apartment in St. Petesrburg for his second wife Gulshat K., born in 1988. The bank account was opened in her name in one of the Russian banks where large amounts of money were transferred to. The investigation failed to identify the extent of the damage.
Nobatov also had the second wife Bibidzhemal D.from Geokdepe, born in 1982.Nobatov bought a four-room apartment in one of the elite apartment blocks located on Oguzkhan street and a Mercedes-Benz.
The female received large amounts of cash and jewelry items.It is known that Bibidzhemal’s family members were detained in India for gold smuggling.
In the meantime the President has ordered Prosecutor General Batyr Atdayev to check the finances and property of the National Security Minister and the Secretary of the Security Council Yalym Berdyev.
Let us recall that a month ago Berdyev was severely reprimanded for “improper performance of job responsibilities and job-related shortcomings”.
