Mikheil Kavelashvili Elected President of Georgia

On December 14, Georgia held historic presidential elections, in which Mikheil Kavelashvili, the candidate of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was elected president, receiving 224 votes out of a possible 300. He needed 200 votes to win.

These elections were the first in the history of Georgia, when the president was elected not by direct vote, but by an electoral college. Mikheil Kavelashvili, born on July 22, 1971 in Tbilisi, began his political career in 2016 and was a member of parliament of the 9th and 10th convocations from the Georgian Dream party.

Before entering politics, he was a famous football player, playing for Dinamo Tbilisi, Spartak-Alania, Manchester City and the Georgian national team.
