The UN General Assembly proclaimed May 25 as World Football Day.
The adoption of the resolution is timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the first ever international football tournament, which was held as part of the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to the press service of the Chairman of the Civil Aviation.
The UN resolution calls on member states to develop national strategies and programs for the development of sport and physical activity, including football, at all levels. This will strengthen the physical and mental health of citizens and foster a culture of sports and a healthy lifestyle in society.
In addition, the document recommends that countries celebrate World Football Day in accordance with national priorities and conduct educational activities highlighting the benefits and values of football for all segments of the population, especially the younger generation.
The proclamation of World Football Day emphasizes the important role of this sport in uniting peoples, strengthening international cooperation and understanding, as well as in creating a healthy society.
