Italian teenager who died of leukemia may become the first saint of the 21st century

15-year-old Carlo Acutis, whose life was cut short by leukemia in 2006, may become a new Catholic saint.

Pope Francis announced the convening of a council of cardinals to consider this issue, recognizing the second miracle attributed to Acutis.

The young man, who was born in London in 1991 but moved with his family to Milan, demonstrated deep faith from an early age.

As his mother, Antonia Acutis, recalls, already at the age of seven he attended mass every day and gave his pocket money to the homeless. His piety not only strengthened his parents’ faith, but also inspired an Indian housewife to convert to Catholicism.

Passionate about computers, Carlo created websites for Catholic organizations, and at school he was never shy about talking about his faith with his classmates.

In 2006, the life of young Acutis was tragically cut short due to leukemia.

14 years later, the diocese of Assisi petitioned the Vatican for Carlo’s beatification.

He was beatified in 2020 after Pope Francis recognized the miraculous recovery of a seven-year-old Brazilian boy from a rare disease after touching Acutis’ T-shirt.

The second miracle pointed to by the Pope was the healing of 21-year-old student Valeria Valverde from Costa Rica. The girl recovered after her mother prayed at the grave of Carlo Acutis. Snob.ru reports this with reference to Vatican News.
