President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to Italy Toily Komekov as the country’s Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Earlier, last week, it was reported that the Central Asian countries, Azerbaijan and Turkey have established a new Committee on development and implementation of a strategy to reduce food loss and spoilage. The Committee is authorized to monitor the development and implementation of a regional program to prevent and reduce losses and spoilage of food products.

This newly established body will also support and monitor the implementation of measures to reduce food loss and spoilage at the country level and facilitate the engagement of partners and stakeholders. In this way, the Committee will serve as a platform for enhanced cooperation and exchange of information and knowledge among participating countries.

The work of the Committee will be carried out within the framework of the FAO project aimed at reducing food loss and spoilage in Central Asian countries, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, which is implemented under the FAO-Turkey Partnership Program for Agriculture.

Within the project, beneficiary countries will be assisted in developing strategies and action plans to reduce food loss and spoilage in accordance with regional policies, and the newly established intergovernmental body will facilitate it by communicating country experiences to the regional level in order to ensure that strategies are aligned with the local context and needs.

“The Committee, which includes government representatives, will be an important tool in addressing the problem of food loss and spoilage and ensuring the coordination of efforts of participating countries,” said Viorel Gutu, FAO Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia.
