IRU supports Turkmenistan’s transport initiatives

Promotion of Turkmenistan’s initiative to ensure stable international transportation during emergencies was discussed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Secretary General of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) Umberto de Pretto.

During a meeting via a video link on Wednesday, February 3, the relevance of this initiative against the backdrop of the pandemic situation in the world, as well as efforts to develop connectivity between the countries through transport and transit corridors and logistics networks was highlighted.

Umberto de Pretto welcomed the large-scale work of Turkmenistan to expand and upgrade transport infrastructure in the country and throughout the region, create conditions to increase its efficiency, which is also facilitated by the accession to international conventions and treaties in this area.

The IRU Secretary General announced the readiness to maintain practical cooperation with Turkmenistan in the full integration of the Lapis Lazuli corridor into the transport system on the continent, and provide support for other transit projects of international importance.

The parties also reviewed the organizational issues related to the Ministerial Transport Conference for Landlocked Developing Countries to be held in Turkmenistan in 2021.
