Iran-Turkmenistan New Gas Deal: 20 Mcm Contract

Iran has signed a gas import deal with Turkmenistan, with the potential to reach up to 20 mcm, Tasnim news agency reported on Wednesday, citing the FARS news agency’s interview with Adviser to the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Sajjad Kashefi.

The adviser added that the two countries have been increasing their ties in the oil and gas sphere, emphasizing a gas swap deal for 5 million cubic meters inked by Iran and Turkmenistan in 2021.

The contract for gas imports from Turkmenistan was first signed in 1996 and was set to last 25 years, with Iran receiving up to 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year.

With the new deal, Iran is now set to expand their imports from Turkmenistan.

Iranian Parliament’s Energy Committee spokesman Malek Shariati Niasar in an interview with SHANA information network on June 5 stated that gas cooperation between the two countries will turn the country into an energy hub and meet the gas demand in its northern and northeastern regions.
