Germany seeks to import gas from Azerbaijan and in a long term perspective from Turkmenistan

On 25 August German Chancellor Angela Merkel is scheduled to visit Azerbaijan.According to the news agency Reuters, gas supplies from the Caspian region to Europe will be the key topic on the agenda of the visit to Baku.

“We have a big interest in further developing the Southern Corridor,” a senior German government official said.

After the launch of Shah Deniz II field Azerbaijan is expected to produce 16 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas a year, with 10 bcm earmarked for Europe and 6 bcm for Turkey and Georgia.

Later, gas could be brought from Turkmenistan, Iran and Iraq to Europe.
