German surgeons performed a number of demonstrational operations in Ashgabat for their Turkmen colleagues, demonstrating the use of modern technologies for minimally invasive surgery.
The operations were successfully performed at the International Center for Endocrinology and Surgery as part of the regular visit of German professors under the program of exchange of experience between medical specialists of Germany and Turkmenistan.
In particular, orthopedic surgeons from Munich Volkmar Jansson and Matthias Pitchman gave “master classes” on arthroscopic reconstructive operations on the knee joints using new, most effective techniques.
One of the operations was also performed to treat a patient’s congenital foot deformity. The minimally invasive nature of these operations is due to the size of the incisions no more than half a centimeter.
“Orthopedic surgery is a rapidly developing area of modern surgery.Until recently, injuries and diseases of the joints, which very often led to stiffness and ankylosis of the joint, were an irreversible cause of disability of the patient, says Dr.
Volkmar Jansson. The International Center of Endocrinology and Surgery has created conditions for joint replacement operations, that is, endoprosthesis replacement, which allows to fully restore the mobility of pathologically altered joints in the shortest possible time.”
“Arthroscopy occupies a special place in orthopedics today. This technique allows to operate on the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and ankle joints while minimizing operational trauma, continues his colleague Matthias Pitchman. Among the main areas of work of this Department are sports and aesthetic orthopedics, treatment of false joints, post-traumatic pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system.”
Also, General Surgeon Dr. Fris Spielberg performed an operation to install an intragastric balloon, which is used to correct body weight in obesity. This modern method is more effective than taking pharmacological drugs, and safer than performing bariatric surgery (gastric banding).
“The essence of the method is to install a balloon with saline solution in the stomach under endoscopic control. The intragastric balloon is made of silicone an inert material that does not cause allergy, rejection and irritation of the surrounding tissues, and does not have a harmful effect on the state of the gastric mucosa,” explains Dr. Spielberg.
The balloon is spread out to a certain volume, usually almost equal to the volume of the stomach. This leads to limited opportunities for a single meal, an earlier onset of satiety. During treatment, the patient develops a conditioned reflex the habit of eating less food, and it is associated with the long-term effect of the intervention.
Installing the intragastric balloon is a temporary procedure. The maximum period of its stay in the stomach is 6 months. However, the procedure may be performed repeatedly, with some interruptions.
German specialists highly appreciated the technological equipment of the International Center for Surgery and Endocrinology in Ashgabat, where the latest medical devices and complexes are installed.
Specially grilling, they studied the availability of operating rooms and intensive care and anesthesiology departments, equipped with Japanese medical apparatus for video laparoscopy, high-quality imaging for intraoperative examination of internal organs, and electrosurgical technique with an additional argon-plasma device for rapid and complete stopping of internal intraoperative bleeding.
The peculiarity of a number of installations (cryodestructors) is that they can be used to perform many surgical operations on an outpatient basis without anesthesia, ensuring the complete absence of blood loss and rough postoperative scars. All this is just a part of the most precise and sophisticated equipment used by surgeons of the Ashgabat Center of Endocrinology.
