Former coach of Portugal national football team takes charge of “Besiktas”

Turkish football club “Besiktas” announced the appointment of Fernando Santos as head coach of the team. He became the third coach of “Besiktas” this season, writes “Championat”.

The 68 years old Portuguese specialist has previously coached clubs such as “Porto”, AEK, “Benfica” and PAOK. He also captained the national teams of Greece, Poland and Portugal. At the helm of the Portuguese national team, Santos won the 2016 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League.

After 18 rounds of this season, “Besiktas” ranks only sixth in the Turkish Championship standings, 18 points behind the leading “Fenerbahce”.

The appointment of such an eminent specialist indicates the desire of the “Besiktas” management to improve the team’s position and return to the fight for the championship. Santos faces a difficult task - to save a disastrous season and win a ticket to the Champions League next year.
