FAO Supports Turkmenistan in Integrated Management of Natural Resources

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) supports Turkmenistan in the integrated management of natural resources, the Baku-based Trend news agency reported on Sunday with reference to the Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia at FAO Viorel Gutu.

He informed that a regional project was launched in 2018 to scale up integrated natural resource management in drought and salinity prone agricultural production landscapes in Central Asia and Turkey.

“The project funded by the Global Environment Facility aims to expand integrated landscape management approaches and integrated natural resource management practices that will help stabilize soil salinization, reduce erosion, improve soil water capture and retention, and reduce loss of agrobiodiversity, thereby reducing desertification trends,” Gutu stated.

The partnership between Turkmenistan and FAO has grown steadily since the country joined the organization in 1995. Over the years, the FAO's technical support has covered a wide range of areas related to food security, agriculture and rural development, with an increasing focus on national capacity building and environmental protection.

The FAO in February of this year organized an online seminar to discuss issues related to the mechanization of the cotton harvest in Turkmenistan, and realized the opportunity for the exchange of experience in this matter between Turkmen and Turkish specialists.
