Correspondents of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” report that one of the most famous and unique monument to V.Lenin in Ashgabat has been dilapidated.
Ceramic tiles in the shape of Turkmen carpet decorations have partially fallen out or cracked. Instead of being reconstructed, the tiles are covered with cement or paint. The doors to the museum to the monument creation have been severely damaged. The premises of the museum are used as a warehouse for storage of various tools.
The monument to Lenin was installed in the centre of the city in 1927 and for many years it has been a tourist attraction and a landmark of the Turkmen capital.
The architect of the monument is the renowned painter Andrey Karelin. It was Karelin who came up with an idea to cover the monument pedestal with bright majolica tiles – a type of ceramics with painted glaze.
More about the history of the monument is available in the article of “Chronicles of Turkmenistan” “Lenin in the carpet”.
As was previously reported as of now about 2,500 various facilities, including monuments and other decorative sculptures worth $37 billion are being built in Turkmenistan. It appears that the renovation of the historical monument which has historic rather than ideological value is not of priority to the authorities, unlike monuments of the Central Asia shepherd dog or a bicycle opened over the past two years. The post Famous monument to Lenin in Ashgabat is dilapidated first appeared on Chronicles of Turkmenistan.
