The government of Frederiksberg, Denmark, intend to abandon the purchase of broiler chickens for government needs. This decision is intended to contribute to the fight against animal cruelty in industrial poultry farming. Euro-pulse.ru reports this.
About 40% of the chicken supplied to nursing homes and other municipal facilities in Fredericksburg now comes from broiler chickens.
Broilers are a special type of chicken bred for rapid weight gain. In a month, a chicken can grow from 50 to 2000 grams, which leads to serious health problems. Unnaturally rapid growth negatively affects the legs and internal organs of the bird, many chickens die from cardiac arrest.
Last year, the Danish parliament already banned the purchase of broiler chickens for government agencies. However, this rule did not extend to the municipal level. Frederiksberg could become the first municipality in the Zealand region to follow suit.
