China tops world ranking for active invention patents

According to a recent study by Roscongress, China is confidently moving towards the status of a leading scientific and technological superpower. The country demonstrates impressive results in several key areas, laying a solid foundation for future leadership, RIA Novosti reports.

Over the past decades, China has made a colossal leap in investment in research and development, increasing their volume by 3299% from 1996 to 2020. This allowed the country to take first place in the world in the number of active domestic patents for inventions and international patent applications.

Chinese scientists lead in the number of highly cited scientific publications in many technological areas. Particularly impressive are the achievements in the field of advanced aircraft engines, including hypersonic technologies, where China accounts for 48% of the most cited studies.

According to the Dutch Rathenau Institute, China is ahead of the 27 EU countries combined in terms of total R&D funding. While the US still leads in absolute terms, China has the highest rate of investment growth.

In addition, China has significantly strengthened its position in the field of artificial intelligence. The share of leading AI researchers working in China has increased from 11% in 2019 to 28% in 2022, indicating the rapid development of this sector in the country.
